Nigerian-American political commentator & television personality Wendy Osefo and her spouse charged with fraud allegations in Maryland
Dr. Wendy Osefo, a prominent figure on The Real Housewives of Potomac, along with her spouse Eddie Osefo, has been apprehended on charges of criminal fraud in Maryland, as reported by TMZ. Court filings accessed by the outlet indicate that Wendy is facing 16 counts, which include seven felonies due to allegedly supplying false or misleading information in a fraud case linked to losses surpassing $300. She is also facing a misdemeanor charge for allegedly making a false declaration to law enforcement.
The couple was reportedly taken into custody on Thursday night in Westminster, Maryland, following a lengthy investigation into a burglary claim they filed in April 2024.
At that time, the Osefos informed authorities that upon their return from a trip to Jamaica, they discovered their bedroom had been "ransacked." They stated that various designer handbags and jewelry items had been stolen. However, prosecutors now assert that this narrative was concocted.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office revealed that investigators found discrepancies in the couple's report. In a shocking turn of events, officials noted that Wendy was later spotted wearing a diamond ring on social media, the same piece she had reported as stolen.
Further details in the prosecution’s bail recommendation documents disclosed that “numerous items” the Osefos claimed had been taken were actually purchased and subsequently returned to stores for full refunds prior to the alleged burglary. The couple purportedly filed an insurance claim worth $450,000 for personal property loss.
Wendy, who made her debut on RHOP in Season 5, is a college professor at Johns Hopkins University, a political commentator for MSNBC and The Hill, and a public affairs scholar with a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. She is also affiliated with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the same sorority as U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, with whom she was photographed during Harris’s presidential campaign.
Just days prior to the arrest, Wendy was present at CultureCon in Brooklyn, New York, where she was observed speaking and taking photos.
The indictments against Wendy and Eddie arrive shortly after another RHOP cast member, Karen Huger, was freed from incarceration last month after serving six months of a one-year sentence for consecutive DUI offenses.Dr. Wendy Osefo, a prominent figure on The Real Housewives of Potomac, along with her spouse Eddie Osefo, has been apprehended on charges of criminal fraud in Maryland, as reported by TMZ.
