Tony Stewart racer dies in alleged car accident

The Indiana State Police are looking into an apparent road rage incident that killed Tony Stewart Racing TQ Midget driver Ashlea Albertson.

Albertson, 24, was a passenger in a GMC Terrain on I-65 in Jackson County, just south of Seymour, Indiana, on Friday around 11:30 a.m. when a man driving a Malibu came alongside the Terrain. According to authorities, video captured by a passenger in another vehicle in the area shows both vehicles speeding up and refusing to allow each other pass. According to ISP, when the driver of the Malibu changed lanes into the path of the Terrain, the SUV driver lost control of his vehicle, forcing the two to collide.

When the Terrian rolled over, Albertson was ejected. The Malibu exited the freeway and came to a stop in a field.

Albertson was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he passed away. The two Malibu drivers and a child passenger were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Both drivers had blood tests. The toxicological results are still being processed. After ISP completes its investigation, its findings will be presented to the Jackson County prosecutor's office, which will decide whether or not to bring charges.

Stewart wrote on social media that he had lost a comrade who had "an infectious personality and could light up any room."

"She was a fantastic race car driver who was killed in a road rage accident," Stewart posted on social media. "I've also been involved in road rage in the past." I hope we can commemorate Ashlea by managing what we can on the road. "Losing her is a stark reminder of how valuable life is."

After learning of his daughter's death, Todd Albertson posted an emotional video on her Facebook page.

"This is one of the most difficult posts I've ever written, but I have no words to put it out other than making a video to share with everyone who loved her and who she loved back," Albertson adds emotionally. "I want to thank you on behalf of my family and myself for making her feel like she was the best racer out there every time she took the track."

"Thank you so much. We adore you. I apologize for informing you in this manner, but it is only fair that everyone is aware and that there is no further speculation.

"She was a better person, a better kid." She loved racing and the community, and you have all done so much for her. Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart. Please keep my family, her fiancé, and everyone else in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

"Those of you who will be at the track this weekend and like racing, please remember that all she ever wanted to do was put on a show... and be loved and revered by all of you who came after her. … Enjoy every moment of your life. It's priceless. We never know when it's our turn."

The wedding of Albertson and Jacob Kelly was set for March 23, 2024.
